Last august Mustad Product Development Manager Geir Sivertzen spent a few days at Sörvær Guesthouse in “The Land of the Big Fish”. Product development includes product testing: “It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.”

Söröya, in the northernmost parts of Norway, is known as the best place in Europe for Arctic Deep Sea Fishing, and again it proved why it got its fame. The technique is simply jigging just above the bottom with the no.1 rig for these waters: The Mustad Lofoten Pilken/Jig 400g Stainless, with a strong Mustad treble hook ref.3565AD, size 8/0 in the lower end, assisted by a Mustad single “Assist hook” attached to the split ring in the upper end. To complete the tackle, a “Team Mustad Norway Rig” (TR1.5002) with two Gummimakk/Sand Eels on Mustad ref 31022D is jigged just above the bottom. Where 90% of the fish are found …

The whole rig, consisting of the 400g jig and the two Sand Eels, is a traditional and well proven one. However, by adding an Assist Hook to the basic model, it’s very often the Assist Hook that hooks the fish. Give it a try, and catch more fish!
