Fly
Fisherman Magazine, July 2001:
"Professional
tiers and anglers have been giving this line
of hooks very good marks."
Global
Fly Fisher Website:
"Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks. Mustad is one of the oldest
hook makers in the business and here they go and forge a new path for
us all. Good for them. Maybe the other companies will take heed and
the days of arbitrary model numbers will fade in our memories like the last
millennium, while the quality and consistency of the product itself continues
to improve."

"DO
YOURSELF A FAVOR and check out Mustad's new Signature
Series hooks at your fly shop. These hooks not
only offer unparalleled sharpness and strength,
but exact proportionality. Signature Series hooks
are precisely scaled across the entire range
of sizes, providing a level of uniformity no
other premium fly hook can guarantee. The wire
diameter, gap width, shank length, point, barb,
etc. are proportionally exact, whether you are
tying on a size-12 dry fly hook or a size-26.
We were amazed at the accuracy of the proportioning
from one hook size to the next. As
a result of Mustad's new three-stage, computer-controlled
Nor-Tempering process, Signature Series hooks
are up to 30% stronger than conventional hooks,
and feature Mustad's chemically sharpened Signature
Point. The quick-piercing Micro barb provides
dramatically faster penetration during hook setting,
and we also found the barb easier to pinch down
for catch-and-release fishing. We
were especially pleased to see Mustad's new,
simple hook numbering system. The 'core' of the
Mustad Alpha Code HookSelect system is the new,
dry/wet fly hook, the R50. In this number
the "R" stands for round bend,
the "5" designates a standard wire diameter,
and the "O" indicates a standard length
shank. If the fly tier is looking for a standard
length shank on a 2x heavy wire nymph hook, then
the number is R70. Add a 2x long shank to this
example and the hook number is R72, a 4x long
shank will be R74. If a 2x light wire dry fly
hook is the goal, the new number is R30. A 2x
short shank version of the R50 will be R48. A
curved hook with the same total length and diameter
would be C48. Get the idea? Signature
Series hook boxes are color coded to indicate
the suggested hook application-- gray for salmon,
blue for Freshwater, and orange for Saltwater.
The inside edges axe rounded to facilitate hook
removal, and, better yet, the empty boxes can
be clipped together to make great dubbing containers. |
