FLY OF THE MONTH

YELLOW MICRO GOLD HEAD
By Luca Montanari

In the small reservoirs, the trout have often the opportunity to feed on chironomid, attacking insects in the pupa stage. In order to allure such fish, the "fliers" generally use very imitative artificials. When hunting for minuscule prey, the rainbow trout, in particular, can be extremely selective. However, a valid strategy to induce them to attack the fly is to tie a Yellow Micro Gold Head on the leader, offering it to the trout in a static way, making it fall slowly to the lake bottom, or using a more active method by retrieving the line quite fast.
Except for its capacity to reflect the sunlight, this fly has few imitative qualities. However, what is likely to provoke the fish to an instinctive reaction of attack is the way its delicate fibres vibrates when it swims and its small-and-vulnerable prey appearance. For these reasons, the Yellow Micro Gold Head should always be present inside the boxes of those anglers that regularly fish in the reservoirs.

(The Yellow Micro Gold Head is one of the 88 flies described in Luca's recent book entitled "Flies - Mosche da pesca". To get more information about it click on http://www.edolimpia.it/lev_1/pesca/top_pesca.htm or send an e-mail to libri@edolimpia.it).

Materials List:
Hooks:
Thread:
Black
Head:
a small gold plastic bead
Ballast:
fine lead wire
Body:
yellow floss
Ribbing:
black thread
Wings and Collar:
natural red cock neck hackle

Tying instructions:
Step 1:
I start the tying process of a Yellow Micro Gold Head introducing a small plastic gold bead on the hook shank, which is then brought close to the hook eye. Next I clamp the hook into the vice jay and in order to realise the ballast structure of the fly, I wrap a piece of fine lead wire along the rear half of the shank.

Step 2:
I tie in the thread on the hook and wrap it around the lead turns to join them firmly to the shank. Next I fix the yellow floss to the hook and wind it around nearly all the shank and part of the bend, in order to form the body.

Step 3:
With open turns of the black thread over the body, I make the ribbing of the fly.

Step 4:
I bind in a small natural red cock hackle behind the golden bead, fixing it so that its tip is protracted a little beyond the hook bend, covering the body.

Step 5:
I grip the stalk of the hackle by means of a pair of pliers and I wind it around the hook section interposed between the body and the golden bead, creating a thin collar.

Step 6:
I fix the hackle and trim off its excess, and finally I whip finish the fly.

Step 7:
A drop of clear varnish behind the golden bead and all over the body will increase the strength of the Yellow Micro Gold Head, helping me to make it last for many exciting fishing expeditions.
