Fishing Reports

A Grander on the Hook (contin.)

Fact Box 1

For many years Madeira has achieved international fame for its frequent visits from big blue marlin. Today the small Portuguese Island is recognised as one of the most exciting European areas for roving big gamers who seek adventures with the gladiators of the Atlantic Ocean. Other popular places are the Azores and Cabo Verde Island.

From mid-June until the start of July the odds of catching the biggest marlin are the best – though the presence of big blue marlin from 350-500 kilo+ is rather limited. Most of the marlin caught by anglers range from 120 to 300 kilo. Trolling with Konaheads catches most of the marlin outside Funchal. The fishing is rather periodic with good and bad days and every period usually lasts from 5 to 10 days. Besides the blue and black marlin some spearfish are usually caught in the beginning of June.

After the tagging and removal of the Konahead’s two Mustad Tuna hooks size 12/0 (ref. 7732) the colossus shook its big bill as a goodbye signal and disappeared in the azure water without any injuries and in good shape.

-I was totally giddy and my legs and arms suffered from lactic acid poisoning, and even after several hours I was still shaking from the adrenaline rush and the excitement of the marlin fight, Jan tells.

On our way back to Funchal Marina Capt. Santos hoisted the marlin flag as a sign of Jan Ring’s victory.

It is Konaheads like the ones on the picture that primarily are used to catch the blue marlin in the waters outside of Funchal. The Konahead is mounted with two Mustad Tuna hooks ref. 7732 size 12/0.
